FAQs

How many treatments will I need?

This varies with the individual patient depending on age and health, and on the problem.  Longer-standing problems typically require more treatment than relatively recent ones.

That said, on average most patients experience meaningful improvement in three to four treatments which, even if not bringing complete resolution, is enough for many to begin a return to normal activity.  More long-standing or serious conditions generally require longer courses of treatment.

Can I claim on my health insurance?

Most private health insurers cover osteopathy.  Check with your insurer for details on your specific policy.

If covered, you will pay for treatment at each appointment and will be given a receipt to reclaim the fee from your insurer.

Can I bring someone with me?

Of course!  Patients' friends and relatives are always welcome.

They also often remember things the patient forgets to mention.

(Needless to say pets are not allowed in clinic).

Patients under 16 must be accompanied by an adult (over 18) throughout every appointment.

Is osteopathic treatment painful?

Although treatment can be momentarily uncomfortable it is very rarely painful, and only briefly.  The day or two after are sometimes a little sore as the strained tissues adapt after the treatment.

However, osteopaths have a highly-developed sensitivity to symptomatic tissues and treatment is usually quite relaxing.

Can you order me an MRI scan or X-ray?

If I think you would benefit from an MRI  scan (rarely the case, in reality) I can arrange this at any one of a number of private facilities.  You can either pay the provider directly or claim on your health insurance (check your cover first).

X-rays have to be ordered by a doctor and so I can write to your GP stating why I think this may be useful for you.

What should I wear?

Ideally you should wear loose comfortable clothing allowing access to the affected area (slim-fit jeans make examining painful knees difficult!)  Tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt or loose sweater are ideal, or bring shorts to change into.

If you are happy to remove clothing for examination and treatment then I will ask you to remove no more than strictly necessary.

What if I can't attend my appointment?

If you find you cannot attend your appointment please call as soon as possible, leaving a voicemail if necessary.

Same-day cancellations prevent other patients from accessing care and are charged at £30.

Appointments missed without notice are charged at the full fee.

I am pregnant, can I have osteopathy?

Absolutely.  Many women choose to have osteopathic treatment both during and after their pregnancy, either for unrelated problems or to help with the various biomechanical strains and pains that come along with it.

Osteopathy is safe during the entirety of a pregnancy.

Do you make home visits?

Unfortunately I do not make home visits.

Whilst it is nice to be able to provide home visits, they block-out large portions of a clinic day (travel both ways, set-up, take-down, reopening clinic etc.), and as I am only in Hextable three days per week I have to ensure appointments are sufficient to keep the clinic viable.
